Fleets Are Switching To EVs Fast - Don't Let Your Business Fall Behind
This episode is a must-watch for fleet operators, logistics managers, and business leaders looking to understand the opportunities and challenges of electrifying fleets, and how to stay ahead of the competition.
The shift to electric vehicles (EVs) isn't just about passenger cars, it’s transforming commercial fleets like supermarket lorries and delivery vans. Electrifying these vehicles is a monumental challenge but also a massive opportunity. Chris and Co-Host Natalie Sauber, Arcadis, met with Ian Dennis, Head of EV Fleet at Zenobe to uncover the below;
Key Insights
1. Depot Charging is the Foundation
Depot charging is the most cost-effective option for many fleets, offering electricity rates as low as 15p per kWh compared to 89p at public chargers.
Grid connection challenges are a major hurdle for depots, leading to innovative solutions like shared charging hubs where multiple operators pool resources.
Zenobe is already trialling this model in Australia.
2. The Behavioural Shift is Crucial
Transitioning to EVs means rethinking operations.
Instead of "fill up and go," operators need to optimise mandatory rest breaks for opportunity charging.
A data-driven approach to route and energy management will be key.
3. Battery Second Life and Recycling are Game-Changers
Used EV batteries, even after years of use, can be refurbished for second-life applications like powering shuttle buses or construction sites.
Zenobe is focused on creating a circular economy, with the goal of recycling 98-99% of battery materials.
4. The Market is at a Tipping Point
Early adopters like Amazon are already scaling their electric fleets due to operational savings in fuel and maintenance.
As demand for zero-emission vehicles grows, businesses that delay risk being left behind.
Zenobe’s advice: Start small, think big, and scale quickly.
5. Don’t Wait for Perfect - Start Now
While advancements like megawatt charging and hydrogen solutions are on the horizon, operators should focus on electrifying what’s feasible now.
Vans and rigid trucks up to 18 tonnes that return to depots daily are ideal starting points.
The window until 2035/2040 deadlines is critical, act now to gain experience and adjust business models.
Why Fleet Electrification Matters
Fleet electrification is more than just swapping diesel trucks for EVs, it’s about redesigning the entire logistics ecosystem. The benefits? Lower operating costs, reduced emissions, and a competitive edge in an evolving market.
The journey has already begun, and early movers are showcasing what’s possible. The big question isn’t if you should electrify, but how and when.
